Is e-invoicing mandatory for my business in Malaysia?
Yes, e-invoicing is mandatory for all taxpayers engaged in commercial activities in Malaysia. The implementation is being rolled out in phases based on your business’s annual turnover or revenue, with full implementation for all businesses by July 1, 2026.
What is the LHDN's e-invoicing timeline?
The implementation is phased to give businesses time to prepare. The key dates are:
- August 1, 2024: Taxpayers with annual turnover or revenue exceeding RM100 million.
- January 1, 2025: Taxpayers with annual turnover or revenue between RM25 million and RM100 million.
- July 1, 2025: Taxpayers with annual turnover or revenue between RM5 million and RM25 million.
- January 1, 2026: Taxpayers with annual turnover or revenue between RM1 million and RM5 million.
- July 1, 2026: All other taxpayers with an annual turnover or revenue of up to RM1 million.
What is a Unique Identification Number (UIN)?
A UIN is a unique identifier issued by the LHDN’s MyInvois system after an e-invoice has been successfully validated. This number, along with a QR code, must be included on the e-invoice and serves as proof that the invoice has been officially recognized for tax purposes.
How does my business submit e-invoices to LHDN?
Businesses can submit e-invoices to LHDN through two main methods:
- MyInvois Portal: A free option provided by LHDN, suitable for businesses with a low volume of invoices.
- API Integration: This is the method used by e-invoicing software providers like Zoomo Tech. Our software integrates directly with the LHDN system, automating the submission and validation process for you.
What happens if I don't comply with the e-invoicing mandate?
Failure to comply can lead to penalties under Malaysian tax law. Actual fines or sanctions depend on the breach and are subject to the latest regulations.
Does e-invoicing apply to cross-border transactions?
Yes, e-invoicing is required for both domestic and cross-border transactions. For purchases from foreign sellers, the Malaysian buyer must issue a self-billed e-invoice. If the foreign seller does not have a Malaysian Tax Identification Number (TIN), the buyer must use the designated identifier provided under the MyInvois guidelines.
Can I still issue paper or PDF invoices?
After your business’s mandatory implementation date, all transactions must be accompanied by a validated e-invoice. While you can provide a human-readable format (like a PDF or printout) to your customers, it must include the MyInvois-issued UIN and QR code to be valid for tax purposes.
